The IoT application ranking tracks the Internet of Things activity of different applications by quantifying popularity and activity for each of the IoT applications. The ranking is updated on a quarterly basis and serves as an indication of the segments that currently enjoy the most activity and buzz.

The basis for the IoT applications ranking is the evaluation of four dimensions:
1. # of news items
How often newspapers and blogs mention each IoT application/segmentation
2. # of Tweets
How often applications get mentioned in tweets with a hashtag on Twitter
3. # of LinkedIn posts
How often posts mention the application field
4. # of Google search items
How often each application is being searched for on Google
The highest scoring segment in each dimension receives a rating of 100%, with all other Internet of Things segments receiving a lower percentage in linear relation to the score of the highest ranking application. The total score is an average of all four measured dimensions.
