Smart Thermostat classification
For the purpose of this study, a “Smart Thermostat” is defined as a thermostat that connects to the internet either directly, via a hub or via a gateway and that uses a dedicated vendor-specific app for monitoring and/or control. This includes point products such as e.g. wifi controlled wall-mounted, thermostats that may serve as a hub for other devices (e.g. Nest thermostat) or thermostats that are part of a whole-home system solution.
The following types of thermostats ARE NOT CONSIDERED a “Smart” thermostat and are not part of this report:
- Basic programmable thermostats are out-of-scope – these devices have been around for a long time and largely consist of a user interface, physical buttons and a display where the desired temperature and schedule can be set by the user. However these traditional thermostat devices are not considered a “Smart” thermostat and therefore not part of the report.
The following types of thermostats ARE CONSIDERED a “Smart” thermostat and are part of this report:
- Connected to internet
Thermostats connected to the internet via various protocols allow for remote monitoring and control via smartphone apps or websites – most common communication protocols include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee and Z-wave. - Connected to smart home ecosystem / interoperability
Thermostats integrated to the smart home ecosystem can act as a hub or simply communicate with other smart home devices. For instance, Apple’s HomeKit offers a unified and seamless user-interface to control devices from different vendors or device classes, thus creating a unified ecosystem usable with Apple’s Siri. - Supporting advanced sensors / self-learning capabilities
Smart thermostats with advanced detection capabilities such as deciding whether someone is home (e.g. using motion sensors, geo-fencing, multiple remote sensors and triggers from other smart home devices), or advanced algorithms that take the type of heating into account and learn the system’s individual response time (e.g. moderated by the construction properties of the building or the peculiarities of the HVAC system).
